If you have been a regular in an aesthetic chair for a few years, you likely know the exact day your results start to fade. You look in the mirror and notice your makeup beginning to settle into those 11 lines between your brows again. For some, that day starts coming earlier and earlier. You might find that a Botox treatment that once lasted four months is now only giving you eight weeks of smooth movement.
When a Botox session feels like it is wearing off too fast, it is rarely a failure of the product. Instead, it is a sign that these neuromodulators and your unique anatomy have reached a stalemate. When a patient feels their results have plateaued, it is often because their body has become too familiar with a specific protein structure. That’s when we look at the divide between the two heavyweights: Botox and Dysport.
To understand the difference, you have to look at how these neuromodulators are built. Human skin aging involves both the surface and how the underlying facial muscles move. Both Botox and Dysport use botulinum toxin to temporarily improve the look of facial wrinkles by relaxing specific facial muscles.
Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA) is a 900 kDa molecule with a large protective protein shell. This weight makes it stay very close to the planned injection site, which is great for precision work around the eyes. Dysport (abobotulinumtoxinA) is a leaner molecule. Because it is smaller, it tends to spread, or diffuse, more easily across the forehead muscles. This isn’t a flaw, it is a strategic advantage for broader areas where you want a soft, naturally blended finish.
Before we dive into the data, we want to address some common questions our patients ask about these treatments:
Yes, switching between these neuromodulators is safe and quite common. Because they use the same active ingredient, your body handles both in a very similar way.
The measurement for Dysport is different than Botox. Typically, the ratio is about 3 units of Dysport to 1 unit of Botox. Your final cost for the treatment usually ends up being very similar.
Dysport often has a quicker onset, with many patients seeing results immediately, or at least within 2 to 3 days, compared to 3 to 7 days for Botox.
While rare, allergic reactions can happen. It is important to tell your medical provider if you have a cow's milk protein allergy, as Dysport contains trace amounts.
The decision between these products is a clinical choice based on what your anatomy requires. While they share the same active ingredient, their molecular structures change how they behave once injected into the targeted area.
Botox is often thought of as the gold standard for precision in smaller zones. Its larger molecular weight means it stays exactly where we put it.
Dysport is the strategic choice for broader areas that benefit from a soft-focus effect.
It is a common myth that you can become totally immune to botulinum toxin, but clinical trials show that true resistance is very rare. However, your body can develop a familiarity with the proteins in one brand. If you have been using the same prescription medicine for years, your muscles might adapt.
Switching to a different neuromodulator product like Dysport can shock the system. Because the protective proteins are different, your nervous system responds to the signal newly. This reset often helps patients achieve the optimal results they remember from their very first appointment.
Both Botox and Dysport are FDA-approved and have been used in millions of Botox treatment sessions worldwide. However, because they are prescription drugs, we must review all your medical conditions before we start.
It is important to tell your medical provider if you have any muscle or nerve conditions, such as myasthenia gravis or Lou Gehrig's disease, as these can increase the risk of serious side effects. You should also mention if you have had allergic reactions to any other botulinum toxin product in the past or if you have a cow's milk protein allergy, as Dysport contains trace amounts.
While most patients only experience mild swelling or bruising at the injection site, you should seek medical help right away if you have trouble swallowing, trouble breathing, or blurred vision. These life-threatening side effects are extremely rare but can occur if the toxin effects spread beyond the treatment area.
We don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to neuromodulators. Your needs change as you move through different phases of life.
To get the most out of your treatment and avoid side effects, we recommend a few simple rules. Do not engage in dangerous activities or strenuous activity for at least 24 hours. This prevents the product from moving to associated muscles where it wasn't intended to go.
You should also avoid blood thinners or cold medicine that can increase bruising. While you can return to normal activities almost immediately, we suggest you don't operate machinery or drive if you experience any double vision or muscle weakness. Usually, any flu-like symptoms or a sore throat will clear up within a few days.
The divide between Botox and Dysport is really a matter of clinical judgment. We analyze your muscle strength and your genetic timing at every visit. If you feel like your results have stalled, it’s time for a new assessment. Our goal is a look that is refreshed, balanced, and unmistakably you.
